The Issey Miyake Spring/Summer 2025 collection, presented in a serene glass pavilion in the Parc Floral, was inspired by the soothing qualities of washi paper.
Designer Satoshi Kondo’s experience at the LOG Hotel in Hiroshima, where his room was decorated with the traditional Japanese paper, sparked this unique exploration of texture and material.
The collection beautifully blends traditional techniques with modern technology, highlighting the diverse forms and inherent qualities of paper. Kondo masterfully incorporates various papermaking processes, from the use of hemp and washi to innovative blends of paper with silk and rayon. The resulting garments display a range of textures and silhouettes that evoke the folds of origami and the delicate wrinkles of aged paper.
The show opened with flowing, draped looks in semi-transparent fabrics, evoking the gentle flow of water on paper. These were followed by structured pieces in hemp and silk blends, with sharp angles and flexible shapes that retained the curled texture of traditional Japanese paper. Knitwear constructed from irregular segments of hemp created a dynamic interplay of tones and textures. Tailored pieces in stiffer woven hemp offered more defined silhouettes, while pleated garments clung to the models, showcasing their springy elasticity.
Playful details such as crocodile clips and a paper bag handbag with integrated washi yarn added a touch of whimsy. Pressed floral motifs on eyewear, hats and masks introduced a delicate beauty, culminating in a stunning series of crinkled silk looks adorned with pressed floral prints.
The collection embodies a harmonious balance of delicacy and impact, leaving a lasting impression of refined artistry and innovative design. The seating, made from recycled paper byproducts of Miyake’s signature pleating process, further emphasized the collection’s focus on sustainability and resourcefulness.
