Farewell to Virgil Abloh on the Louis Vuitton catwalk last Thursday, where at the moment when the designer traditionally comes to greet the public after the fashion show, the entire team of his studio, wearing t-shirts in the colors of the setting sun, purple and orange, came to greet at length under the applause, tears and emotion.

On a sky-blue set dubbed the Louis Dreamhouse, parkour athletes, acrobatic dancers, breakdancers, mimes, the Britain’s Chineke Orchestra, led by the famous Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, a front-row of celebrities including Bernard Arnault, Abloh’s wife Shannon Abloh, Naomi Campbell, Venus Williams, J Balvin, Tyler, the Creator who wrote the soundtrack and more than 400 guests, they all came to applaud the last collection of the late Virgil Abloh, who died of cancer on November 28th, 2021.
Ninety-five percent complete by the time of Abloh’s unexpected death, the collection encapsulated the themes of childhood, what the designer calls Boyhood Ideology – Boyhood Ideology is the ability to see the world with the unspoiled eyes of a child. “Through this lens, the membrane between reality and imagination is nonexistent. Dreams can come true”, Vuitton said in the collection notes – and the touches of surrealism that ran through his eight collections for the French luxury house.
It translated into streetwear elements that Abloh has introduced to the luxury house; ethereal touches, such as a few models dressed in ivory outfits, sporting kite-shaped wings made of white lace; pleated skirts and faded denim jeans; sports-influenced pieces covered in playful, childlike graphics; outfits incorporating tapestry renditions of paintings by Gustave Courbet and Giorgio de Chirico; costumes accented with utilitarian accessories and coats with exaggerated shoulders. There were also many of Louis Vuitton’s iconic reworked accessories as well as his original sneaker designs, including the Tactic and Trainer.
It was all there, and everyone came to pay their last homage to one of the most talented designers of his generation.
