John Galliano and Maison Margiela have announced the end of their ten-year partnership. The final curtain fell with the highly acclaimed Spring/Summer 2024 Artisanal show in January.
Employees learned of the departure just before the company’s Christmas party. Despite the unexpected news, the split was remarkably amicable. Both Galliano and Maison Margiela expressed their deep gratitude for the journey together.
John Galliano’s tenure at Maison Margiela has been nothing short of revolutionary. When he stepped into the role of Creative director in 2014, he inherited a brand known for its conceptual minimalism and deconstructivist approach. Galliano, known for his theatrical flair and opulent designs, seemed an unlikely fit. Yet he showed respect for the brand’s heritage while infusing it with new energy. The brand experienced remarkable growth under his leadership, with sales approaching $500 million.
The partnership produced many memorable moments, particularly through the Artisanal line. Galliano’s interpretation of haute couture pushed boundaries through unconventional material choices and innovative techniques. One of the most memorable moments of his tenure was the 2018 Met Gala, where Rihanna wore a Margiela creation inspired by papal regalia. The ensemble became one of the most iconic looks of the event. Additionally, model Leon Dame‘s viral runway walk in 2020 exemplified his influence on fashion presentation and showmanship.
Under the umbrella of Renzo Rosso’s OTB Group, Maison Margiela flourished financially and creatively under Galliano’s leadership. The brand successfully expanded its retail presence and digital footprint, connecting with a new generation of luxury consumers while maintaining its distinctive identity.
Prior to his time at Maison Margiela, Galliano made a significant mark at Dior. His tenure there was celebrated for lavish, historically inspired collections that rejuvenated the house’s prestige. However, his career hit turbulence in 2011 after a highly publicized scandal involving racist and anti-Semitic remarks. The incident led to a temporary retreat from the fashion world until his comeback with Maison Margiela in 2014.
Galliano has not said what he might do next, and Maison Margiela has not yet announced its succession plan.
This departure adds to a series of significant changes across the fashion landscape, joining shifts at other prestigious houses including Chanel, Dries Van Noten, Fendi, Alberta Ferretti, Missoni and Helmut Lang.
