Olivier Rousteing, the creative director of Balmain, drew inspiration from the brand’s archives from the late 1960s to early 1970s for his Pre-Fall 2023 collection. Known for his skill at incorporating historical elements in his designs, Rousteing delved deeper into the archives to uncover new inspiration and was particularly drawn to the glamour of the period when the founder of Balmain moved away from traditional styles. The collection features leopard prints, round shapes, gold buttons, the Labyrinth monogram, and vintage pieces such as 1970s silk scarves turned into tops, tunics, and skirts.
Rousteing also included more extravagant pieces such as crystal-paved tops and dresses resembling brooches and bows. He sees Balmain as a “sleeping beauty” with rich archives to mine and is excited to continue exploring the brand’s history to create a diverse and approachable collection that resonates with today’s fashion enthusiasts.
