Everyone has their own imaginary world from which to draw inspiration. For Chinese designer Sean Suen, it’s the in-between state of discomfort and hangover, and for American Rick Owens, it’s the stoic permanence of Egyptian temples against time. For Sweden’s Jonny Johansson at Acne Studios, his world was a joyous memory, to which he returned once again to not only recall that unforgettable moment, but also to inspire his new seasonal offering: his wedding.
This led him to a collection that plays with formal wear archetypes, imagining a quirky wedding party, where each look was assigned to an imaginary guest.
“When you go to a wedding, you do the best you can in the occasionwear genre. And then you always have these rebels who can’t stick to the concept. I think they’re very interesting”, the designer said humorously.
So how about a gold tank top that glows to blind the other person, paired with a satin shirt and shorts with a panther paw pattern? How about a salmon pink sweater with a kitschy tulle flounce worn with leather shorts of the same color? Crochet knits distorted and wispy? Or even white shorts for the bride?
The Spring/Summer 2023 collection was completed with accessories such as bug sunglasses, rosebud necklaces, and heart-shaped cut-out leather globes… It all exuded kitsch, spontaneity and sometimes ridiculousness and self-deprecation, but it’s so Acne Studios.
