The art of dressing up has always been a thrilling and captivating part of human instinct. From the childhood days of costume parties to the teenage years of experimenting with personal style, the desire to transform ourselves through clothes remains timeless. For the Fall/Winter 2023 collection, Victoria Beckham takes this concept of constructing a character and presents it in an eclectic and eccentric manner.
Inspired by the fearless and unconventional women in her community, the designer’s second Paris show pays homage to an experimental approach to style that has fueled her own passion for fashion. To set the tone for the collection, Victoria Beckham invites Drew Barrymore to revisit the role of Little Edie Beale from the 2009 film “Grey Gardens“. This 1975 documentary-inspired performance celebrates Little Edie’s mesmerizing relationship with clothing and serves as the foundation for an idiosyncratic collection.
The collection is founded in eclecticism, with a focus on texture and the art of dressing. Dresses composed from raw patchwork of plissé fabrics set the tone for the season, paired with large feathers that serve as embellishments and trippy feather prints on both day and evening dresses. The collection also explores the use of hair as a material, inspired by Brazilian artist Solange Pessoa, with crochet knitwear and pumps crafted from hair extensions.
Circular cuts and twists play a prominent role in the collection, from the circular leg holes of long dresses to circular crinolines in evening gowns. The collection presents an exuberant approach to dressing and construction, embodied in a black dress made from ruffled mesh fabric and high leather boots with a croc-embossed pattern. Tailoring also takes a creative turn, with the inner construction and hand-tagging of the tailor’s workshop revealed in strong-shouldered blazers and exaggerated pleats in deconstructed denim skirts and knitwear.
The collection also introduces a new take on the Victoria Beckham Bucket bag in croc-embossed leather, as well as the Chain Pouch in grained or croc-embossed leather, available in various sizes. The pointed toes of sky-high platform shoes in glazed or croc-embossed leather add the finishing touch to this eccentric and imaginative collection.
