In the dynamic world of high fashion, Burberry continues to carve its innovative path, particularly through the groundbreaking debut of footwear under the creative leadership of Daniel Lee. The British luxury house is establishing new terrains, moving beyond the quintessential and harnessing the power of its heritage Equestrian Knight logo, a symbol that’s becoming a central feature in the designer’s footwear premiere.
Burberry, through its revitalized Instagram platform, has been keen to spotlight its brand ambassadors, including cultural icons such as Stormzy, Skepta, Jodie Comer, Burna Boy, Mary J Blige and Kano. The brand’s social media presence emphasizes a closer examination of the footwear introduced in Lee’s inaugural collection.
The Fall/Winter 2023 fashion show, unveiled during London Fashion Week, marked a departure from the conventional Burberry aesthetics championed by its former Creative director, Riccardo Tisci. The house’s signature checks and the classic trench coat were left in the shadows, ceding the spotlight to the exciting and fresh direction of Lee. He has astutely reimagined the Christopher Bailey-reintroduced Equestrian Knight logo from 1909, integrating it into various items and fostering a new representation of British identity.
Daniel Lee’s creative vision is encapsulated by a diverse blend of British symbols, including roses, rabbits, anoraks, and tartans, along with the introduction of technical garments. But it’s the footwear collection that truly captures the attention of critics and enthusiasts alike. Lee’s artistic direction mirrors the trend of other luxury houses, such as Tiffany & Co., Christian Louboutin, and Hermès, that have harnessed the power of color and branding to create standout pieces.
Burberry’s new line of footwear, in particular, boasts of the rich blue soles on formal derby shoes. What sets these apart is the debossed Equestrian Knight and Burberry Prorsum insignia on the soles, a masterstroke that subtly yet powerfully signifies the brand’s heritage. The iconic logo is further presented in black with blue branding and appears again, outlined on a pair of faux fur-trimmed kitten heels.
Daniel Lee’s tenure at Burberry is paving the way for a new era, one where tradition and modernity seamlessly intertwine.
