Mugler has announced Miguel Castro Freitas as its new Creative director, marking a change for the brand known for its bold silhouettes and avant-garde approach. Freitas steps into the role previously held by Casey Cadwallader, who left after seven years of redefining Mugler‘s modern identity.
Freitas brings considerable experience to Mugler, having previously held senior design positions at Sportmax, Dries Van Noten and Christian Dior Couture. The Portuguese designer will officially begin his role on April 1st, with his first collection set to debut during Paris Fashion Week this fall for the Spring/Summer 2026 season.

“Miguel lives and breathes the Mugler spirit,” said Danièle Lahana-Aidenbaum, global brand president of Mugler Fashion and Fragrances. “His deep understanding of Mugler’s DNA and his vast creativity and talent made him a natural choice.”
Adrian Corsin, managing director of Mugler Fashion, echoed these sentiments, praising Freitas’ technical skills and unique vision. “His love and knowledge of Mugler’s couture codes and heritage will be a limitless source of storytelling to propel the house into the future,” Corsin said.
Freitas, who graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2004 with a degree in womenswear, spent the earlier part of his career honing his craft at houses such as Julie Verhoeven, Givenchy, Lanvin and Yves Saint Laurent. Interestingly, Freitas shares an unexpected connection with the brand’s founder, Manfred Thierry Mugler – both were dancers in their youth.
“It is an honor to join the spectacular house of Mugler,” said Freitas. “As one of the 20th century’s great couturiers, Mr. Mugler reimagined the power and limits of fashion. Alongside the teams, I am thrilled to bring my own vision, story and emotion to this monumental heritage.”
Casey Cadwallader’s departure marks the end of an important era for Mugler. The American designer, who joined from Acne Studios, revitalized the brand with a fresh approach to body-conscious designs and energetic presentations. His runway shows became cultural moments that fused fashion with performance and inclusivity. Mugler confirmed that he would be leaving at the end of March, though his future plans remain unknown for now.
Casey Cadwallader reflected on his time at Mugler with appreciation, calling the brand truly unique. He said it was exciting to work with such a distinctive label in today’s cultural landscape, and thanked his team and collaborators for helping to bring his ideas to life.
Danièle Lahana-Aidenbaum also acknowledged Cadwalader’s influence, noting how his fresh perspective brought Mugler to a younger audience. She highlighted how his work stayed true to the brand’s values of empowerment, inclusivity and self-expression.
Mugler was founded by Manfred Thierry Mugler, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 73. Before Casey Cadwallader, designers such as David Koma, Nicola Formichetti and Rosemary Rodriguez led the brand. French beauty company L’Oréal has owned Mugler since 2019. Previously, Groupe Clarins – Mugler‘s former owner – discontinued its ready-to-wear line in 2003 due to financial losses, but brought it back in 2008.
