Ludovic de Saint Sernin, the Paris-based Creative director known for his boundary-pushing designs, has been announced as the next guest couturier for Jean Paul Gaultier.
Born in Brussels and raised in Paris, de Saint Sernin, a graduate of the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré, has quickly risen to prominence since launching his eponymous label in 2017. His body-skimming looks and references to queer culture have garnered attention from celebrities and fashion insiders alike. Now, he joins a list of designers who have had the honor of interpreting Gaultier’s iconic aesthetic.
The announcement is part of Gaultier’s innovative approach to keeping his brand fresh and relevant. Since retiring from the runway in 2020, Gaultier has come up with the idea of inviting different designers to create one-off couture collections, each offering a unique perspective on his vast body of work. This strategy has not only maintained interest in Gaultier’s contributions to fashion, but has become a highly anticipated event during Haute Couture Week.
The appointment of de Saint Sernin is particularly fitting given the shared values of the two designers. Both are known for their commitment to the free expression of sexuality, body positivity and gender fluidity. Gaultier, who famously put men in skirts in 1984, paved the way for designers like de Saint Sernin to continue pushing the boundaries of fashion.
As the eighth guest couturier for the Gaultier brand, de Saint Sernin follows in the footsteps of other designers such as Nicolas Di Felice of Courrèges, Simone Rocha, Julien Dossena of Rabanne, Haider Ackermann, Olivier Rousteing of Balmain, Glenn Martens of Diesel, and Chitose Abe of Sacai.
The upcoming Jean Paul Gaultier by Ludovic de Saint Sernin collection, which will debut during Paris Haute Couture Week Spring/Summer 2025, scheduled for January 27th-30th, 2025.
