Glenn Martens, the Belgian designer who catapulted Y/Project to international acclaim, is stepping down as the brand’s Creative director after an 11-year tenure. Martens’ unique contributions to Y/Project have been praised by the label. “Y/Project thanks Glenn for his unique contributions to the label and wishes him the best for the future,” the statement noted.
Since taking the helm in 2013, Martens has become synonymous with Y/Project’s edgy aesthetic, known for its signature skewiff sweaters and crooked hems that have garnered a cult-like following in the fashion world. Under his leadership, the brand has collaborated with such diverse labels as Fila, Jean Paul Gaultier and Salomon, further cementing its status as a boundary-pushing force in the industry.
Martens credited Y/Project and its late CEO, Gilles Elalouf, for giving him the freedom to express his vision while building on the label’s established creative artistry. Elalouf, who tragically passed away last June, was instrumental in supporting Martens’ innovative approach.
The announcement of Martens‘ departure comes on the heels of Y/Project’s cancellation of its Fall/Winter 2024 runway show due to cash flow issues. The brand’s future creative direction remains uncertain, as does Martens’ next move, despite currently serving as Creative director of Diesel.
At the moment, it is unclear who will take on the role at Y/Project. Y/Project’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection, originally scheduled to be shown on September 29th during Paris Fashion Week, has been canceled, according to sources familiar with the matter.
