The Givenchy Men’s Cruise 2024 (Resort 2024) collection stands as a testament to the brand’s innovative spirit and commitment to redefining menswear. The collection, masterminded by Matthew M. Williams, is a thoughtful exploration of the intersection between tradition and rebellion, offering fresh answers to the perennial question: What do men want to wear today that they can’t find in stores?
Williams, known for his unique aesthetic, brings a new perspective to menswear, focusing on the concept of “wardrobing” – the pursuit of the elusive perfect piece. He notes that many traditional garments are designed to be worn in a specific way that may not align with modern sensibilities. For instance, the conventional button-up shirt is often designed to fit snugly, intended to be worn under a jacket with a tie. However, Williams recognizes that many men, including himself, prefer a more casual approach, wearing these shirts over a t-shirt. This insight led to the creation of a button-up shirt designed specifically for this purpose in the Cruise 2024 collection.
The collection is a study in the dynamic tension between tradition and rebellion that shapes menswear. Williams skillfully navigates this tension, reimagining the layers and proportions of his designs and blending different menswear genres. He adds a touch of his signature style with the strategic use of hardware. A prime example is a meticulously oversized tailored jacket paired with wide skate pants adorned with punk-inspired metal fixtures. Another standout piece is a ’50s-style biker jacket updated with ’90s technical zippering, worn over straight-legged workwear pants. These looks are complemented by crossbody versions of the house’s Voyou bag.
In Williams’ words, “I like to develop things that might seem simple. But in actuality, I don’t know where you can buy these pieces. That’s why in this collection I was working to create a balance between a strong fashion proposal that’s directional and a series of timeless and elevated wardrobing pieces that I want to wear, and which I would have trouble finding anywhere”. This statement encapsulates the essence of the Givenchy Men’s Cruise 2024 collection: a harmonious blend of the timeless and the innovative, the traditional and the rebellious, the familiar and the unexpected.
