In an era spanned over two decades, Y-3 and adidas – a duet harmoniously uniting Yohji Yamamoto‘s creative genius and adidas’ unrivalled sporting legacy – have blazed a trail in avant-garde sportswear. This innovative odyssey surges forward as Fall/Winter 2023 unveils Y-3’s third chapter in an annual narrative – a subversive adaptation of sportswear symbolism, silhouettes and fabrics under Yamamoto’s rebellious design gaze.
Drawing from adidas’ illustrious sports heritage, the third chapter of this year’s apparel repertoire sees Y-3 reshaping the academia-inspired themes of prior seasons for a novel ambiance. Evoking the spirit of classic varsity style typography, a myriad of graphics are elegantly arrayed on jackets, tees and hoodies with techniques ranging from kettle stitch embroidery to puff prints and engineered knits. The sartorial assemblage is crowned with a curated selection of quilted garments, inspired by the outlines of adidas Originals Aloxe tracksuit, manifesting as jackets, vests, skirts, and trousers.
Respecting the core essence, footwear keeps its conceptual lineage intact. The Y-3 CENTENNIAL HI and Y-3 CENTENNIAL LO re-envision a prototypical athletic footwear silhouette with a flair for the grandeur in their material makeup. Further, the collection offers a fresh interpretation of time-honored adidas Originals styles including the Y-3 SUPERSTAR, Y-3 MARATHON TR, and Y-3 GAZELLE.
Complementing the collection is a range of striking accessories – from sophisticated totes, gym bags, and backpacks to knit beanies and caps, thus ensuring a cohesive style narrative.
For Spring/Summer 2023, the narrative journeyed through Yamamoto’s homeland, Japan. For Fall/Winter, the story takes us to adidas’ birthplace, Germany, featuring Berlin’s vibrant, flourishing creative scene. Local photographer, Lengua, and motion director, Thyago Sainte, bring to life a tapestry of personal narratives, featuring an intriguing blend of Berlin-based musical talents – the genre-defying LA Timpa, Britain’s cult figure Tricky, the unconventional DJ Mobile Girl, Korean DJ Tobias aka Why Be, artist-musician Bill Kouligas, and DJ duo Dimitra and Soraya of Kontinuum Productions.
With a refreshed perspective on sport-inspired design, Y-3 Fall/Winter 2023 Chapter 3 launches August 1st, accessible at adidas.com/y-3, in Y-3 stores, and from a selection of global retailers.
