Jun Takahashi’s Undercover Fall/Winter 2024 collection offered a poignant exploration of everyday life, elevating the ordinary through unexpected embellishments. The show, held in a nondescript school cafeteria, served as the backdrop for models adorned in seemingly mundane attire – jeans, cardigans, sweatshirts – transformed by the addition of whimsical fabrics like organza, chiffon, and even tinsel.
The fluttering panels added a touch of whimsy to the everyday, mirroring the soundtrack by German filmmaker Wim Wenders, which recounted the routine of a working mother. As the show progressed, the fabric embellishments grew more extravagant, culminating in a regal gold lamé train worn by veteran model Rose van Bosstraeten.

Takahashi, drawing inspiration from Wenders’ film “Perfect Days,” sought to capture the beauty found in ordinary life, much like the film’s protagonist, a Tokyo toilet cleaner who finds joy in the everyday. This sentiment translated into several captivating pieces, such as a cardigan trailing wisps of silk or a leather jacket fused with checkered scarves. However, some found the later pieces, with their overwhelming layers of fabric, to be tiresome and a departure from Undercover’s signature rebellious spirit.
In stark contrast, the previous season delved into personal grief, showcasing Takahashi’s emotional depth as a designer. This time, the designer championed the preciousness of routine and the beauty found in the mundane. The collection resonated with its relatable approach, offering an alternative to the often-fantastical portrayals of women and their wardrobes in the fashion world.
