When one envisions Blumarine‘s Spring/Summer 2024 collection, a celestial narrative unfolds. Gone is the intensity of the Joan of Arc collection’s sandy mounds and blazing pyres, replaced instead with a stark white box that speaks of purity and serenity. No longer do we see those skimpy pink Barbies from earlier displays, nor the theatrical red Lamborghini placed strategically on the runway. Nicola Brognano has taken a turn, ushering in an era of ‘lightness’ – but not in the way you might imagine.
Butterflies have emerged as the central motif this season, fluttering with an assertiveness that juxtaposes their delicate nature. Not the dainty creatures of lore, these butterflies make a bold statement. Once, they made headlines on TikTok-adored tops, but now they’ve evolved into sequined thongs, cheekily alluded to by Brognano as “pussy butterflies“. These are not symbols of innocence but icons of audacious self-expression.
Drawing the eyes of every spectator were the ethereal male models, reminiscent of angels with glitter-dusted torsos. Adorning low-rise gold-leather trousers, they portrayed an image of alluring lightness that was hard to look away from. The angelic theme, replete with feathers, echoed the lightness that Brognano aimed to convey, albeit with a touch of the risqué.
Blumarine’s palette mirrored its new direction – pastel hues and diaphanous fabrics. Lightness was further illustrated with airy ribbons, breezy trains, and ultra-short yet captivating dresses. Gold leather brought a sheen to pedal pushers and corsets, while clear PVC bustiers and pencil skirts, generously bedazzled with rhinestones and crystals, celebrated a radiant form of bareness.
Yet, it’s crucial to highlight that this lightness isn’t just about shedding layers. Brognano’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection captures a spirit – a transformation from the dark depths of past seasons to an ethereal plane, making use of symbols that carry weight, while retaining a sense of buoyancy. It’s a delicate balance, one that Blumarine has masterfully achieved this season.
