For Sacai Spring 2027, Chitose Abe looks beyond the finished surface of a garment. Rather than hiding linings, seams and internal supports, she brings many of them into view. The approach fits the collection’s title, “A Moment of Becoming,” which considers identity not as something settled but as something still being formed.
That idea is familiar territory for Abe, whose work has long depended on taking recognizable clothes apart and rebuilding them through unexpected combinations. This season, however, the method feels less concerned with technical surprise for its own sake. Construction becomes a way of discussing what is normally concealed and what eventually becomes visible.
Utility provides the starting point. Bomber jackets, parkas, blazers, cargo skirts and tailored trousers appear throughout the collection, but few remain straightforward. Some jackets expand into rounded proportions. Others reveal layers that would usually sit beneath an outer shell. A parka reproduces the effect of a lining being attached, while transparent outer layers expose elements that conventional garment making would normally keep inside.
Abe also softens these practical references through fabric. Denim and tailoring sit beside chiffon, satin and transparent materials. White looks are particularly light in appearance, with loose sleeves, ruffles and translucent sections breaking up more protective forms. Elsewhere, leather and fur effects add density without pushing the collection into heavy territory.

The contrast is important because Sacai has often relied on the meeting of different wardrobe categories. Here, the distinction is less between masculine and feminine dressing than between protection and exposure. A structured jacket may contain delicate material. A narrow skirt can end in a sharply ruffled hem. Cargo shapes gain volume through gathered fabric while retaining their functional patch pockets.
Decoration adds another layer. Military-style epaulettes are reconsidered with tassels and oversized crystals, while stones appear around cuffs and pocket flaps. Black chokers carry reflective pendants, and some printed surfaces reproduce the appearance of fur, loose sequins or rhinestones. These additions do not erase the practical origin of the clothes. Instead, they make familiar utility pieces less predictable.
The palette remains controlled. Black, khaki and gray establish much of the collection’s foundation, with white creating clearer visual breaks and red used as a stronger accent. That restraint helps the construction details remain easy to read, particularly when several fabrics or garment structures appear within a single look.
There are also more direct pieces. A high-collared jacket uses generous volume without excessive layering, while a tightly pleated midi skirt gains distinction from its shaped hem. Such looks show that Abe does not need complex hybrid construction in every garment to communicate the season’s idea.
What makes Sacai Spring 2027 convincing is the consistency of its method. Abe treats the inside of clothing as usable design material rather than something to conceal. Linings, supports and unfinished-looking junctions become part of the final appearance.
The result is not a proposal for one fixed type of woman. Instead, the collection presents clothing as something capable of revealing several sides of a person at once. For Abe, becoming is less about arriving at a final identity than accepting that what lies underneath can remain visible.
