Wooyoungmi, a brand founded two decades ago in Seoul, has always been heavily influenced by Parisian fashion. However, with the recent global popularity of South Korean culture, designer Woo Youngmi has chosen to explore the historical relationship between her homeland and the West in the brand’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection.
This collection draws inspiration from the Pavillon de Corée, a building constructed in the style of South Korean palaces but located in Paris, which was unveiled at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Instead of focusing on the current Western perception of South Korean pop culture, the collection imagines the artistic exchange between Paris and Seoul at the turn of the century through a modern lens.
The collection presents a blend of contemporary and historical elements, including riding coats, sack suits, and riding boots, as well as jewelry from the Silla kingdom, which ruled South Korea for a thousand years. The collection also features a play on proportions, with macro and micro elements, and a color palette inspired by the volcanic landscape of Jeju island.
