The latest trend in fashion is moving towards a new sensuality, with designers showcasing collections that are both sexy and refined. During New York Fashion Week, many designers have presented pieces that feature sheer and form-fitting silhouettes, with a focus on black and accents of shine, slits, and slashes.
Designer Ulla Johnson has embraced this trend in her own unique way, presenting her Fall/Winter 2023 collection that was both more sensual and piece-y. Johnson was inspired to create a more reductive approach that emphasized the body, as seen in the lustrous and sheer fabric play. On the runway, this translated to angora sweaters, bra tops, tulip skirts, crochet slips, and hand-stitched dresses in warm autumnal colors. The collection also featured suede fringe kitten-heel sling backs and a focus on soft tailoring, with a light green suit and glossy leather cargo pants.
Johnson has also put an emphasis on artisanal knitwear, showcasing intricate crochet squares and macramé dresses that skim the body. And with her Los Angeles store opening in May, Johnson has a growing gown business, with bouncing, ruffled, off-the-shoulder moire taffeta styles receiving an incredible response from audiences.
