On Friday night in New York, Thom Browne scheduled his Fall/Winter 2022 show on the second floor of the Javits Center, a conference center located in Manhattan – he staggered his collection to better couple with his partner Andrew Bolton’s ‘’In America: An Anthology of Fashion’’ exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, which is scheduled to begin on May 07.
The collection served as a love letter to New York City, which in the eyes of the designer, “is the city of toys and that everyone comes here to find themselves or create themselves… It’s a place where you can be true to yourself and comfortable. This collection, in a very strong way, I wanted to celebrate that”.
“The collection is based on toys… The adults are coming to the show to find their corresponding toy, and their corresponding toy is their true self. In a way, because the toys in the collection are so individual and unique to what the object is, I think it represents each individual being a unique, true individual”, Thom Browne went on to explain.
The first 24 looks were signature versions of Browne’s tailoring, with pleated kilts in houndstooth and plaid patterns, chunky cable knit sweaters in tricolor stripes, and lots of gray suits with piping and panels in bright, collegiate colors. The next 24 looks were their “conceptual” mirrors, designed with exceptional whimsy and craftsmanship to express individuality and authentic self-expression.
