Freedom to move was a theme in several designers’ shows at New York Fashion Week last Saturday, beginning with Kate and Laura Mulleavy from Rodarte. Their Spring/Summer 2022 collection was a proper declaration of re-emergence, of spiritual glitz, and of reconnecting to nature.

The collection started with elegant black-and-white looks, ranging from floor-length gowns with various cut-outs to mini-dresses and blazers with patterns and ruffles. There were hints of a nature theme in seashell-inspired beading and abstract prints which took on the form of palm fronds. Then, merged from the courtyard-turned runway surrounded by statues and cacti in giant pots weird things as the show went on: pale pinks gave way to sunset oranges; little green alien on a spectacular hand-beaded scenic cape; and dazzling beaded fringe dresses in shocking pink, yellow or black.
To end the show, models came out in identical tunic dresses, each one a different sunset hue, and stood barefoot around the courtyard. The final model wore a billowing purple gown, her arms tucked inside of a cocoon, small succulent in hand.
