Prada‘s first standalone dining space in Asia, Mi Shang, will open on March 31st at Rong Zhai Shanghai, the meticulously restored historic mansion that has become a cultural landmark in the city.
Conceived by renowned Hong Kong filmmaker Wong Kar Wai, Mi Shang, which means “be obsessed with” in Chinese, promises to be an intriguing destination for fashion enthusiasts and fine dining lovers alike.
Wong Kar Wai’s influence is evident in every detail of Prada Mi Shang. The restaurant’s logo, inspired by the philatelic concept of tête-bêche – two identical stamps joined together, one upside down – symbolizes the interplay of cultures. The interior design reflects Wong’s cinematic style, with mirrors and contrasts creating a visual narrative reminiscent of his iconic films such as “In the Mood for Love” and “Happy Together.” Prada describes the space as a “visual dialogue” between Milan and Shanghai, fusing Italian sophistication with Chinese heritage. “Building on the success of Prada’s partnership with filmmaker Wes Anderson to create Bar Luce at Fondazione Prada in Milan, the Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai project stands as a testament to the brand’s ongoing commitment to foster artistic conversations and practices,” the brand wrote in a statement.
Located on the second floor of the four-story Rong Zhai, Mi Shang will offer an all-day dining experience. The menu, which has yet to be fully revealed, will feature Italian cuisine with Chinese flavors, as well as breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and evening cocktails. The cafe and restaurant will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., with reservations beginning March 29th through Mi Shang’s WeChat Mini Program. The official launch event, a cocktail reception hosted by Prada, will take place on March 28th at Rong Zhai.
This collaboration marks another milestone between Prada and Wong Kar Wai. Their partnership began with the 2024 capsule collection inspired by Wong’s acclaimed television series “Blossoms Shanghai.” Prada first became involved when Wong’s production team approached the brand to source costumes for the show, leading to a creative relationship that continues today.
