MM6 Maison Margiela, the Maison Margiela sub-label, staged its Spring/Summer 2022 show at La Belle Aurore, a Milanese bistro, where guests were invited to mingle over snacks and drinks (on the menu : beer and gin cocktails, finger sandwich of Jerusalem artichoke and fennel, and dessert in the form of a hollowed egg shell filled with white chocolate).

In balance between portability and avant-garde, the collection experimented with trompe l’oeil, citing female surrealists like Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, and Dorothea Tanning as inspiration.
Among key pieces, there were power suits, soigné evening gowns, rugged streetwear with a surrealist bent, clownish and checkerboard printed ensembles with neck ruffs, peak-lapelled jackets meticulously crafted from a silk-blend, pleated circle skirts, trompe l’oeil bodysuits, and an enticing range of opera-length gloves.
“Sleeves and gloves become key vehicles for the collection’s surreal undertones, protruding from trouser waistbands, bag handles and even the back panels of a leather jacket, and traces of the making process are felt in a kraft paper bustier and an intricately pleated calico ruff skirt”, we can read on the show notes. Accessories-wise, the collection offered a refined melange of now famed MM6 silhouettes through the lens of fantastical design elements, including a hilarious faux-fur roller suitcase in collaboration with Eastpak.
