In an exclusive interview with Elle US, the Grammy-winning rapper, opened up about her traumatic experience in 2020 and her journey towards healing and reclaiming her power. The artist, known for her unapologetic persona and empowering lyrics, shared her perspective on the incident that nearly cost her life and the subsequent public scrutiny she faced.
Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, was shot by someone she once considered a close friend. This event, which occurred in July 2020, was followed by a prolonged period of public humiliation and character assassination. The accused, Tory Lanez, consistently denied the allegations and used social media to discredit her. Megan’s resilience in the face of such adversity is a testament to her strength and determination.
“I don’t want to call myself a victim. As I reflect on the past three years, I view myself as a survivor, because I have truly survived the unimaginable“, she said.
The rapper also spoke candidly about the emotional toll the incident and its aftermath took on her. Despite her public persona, she confessed to battling depression and struggling with her music. She revealed that there were times when she would be crying backstage, only to pull herself together and perform as Megan Thee Stallion.
The guilty verdict against Lanez, delivered on December 23rd, 2022, was a significant moment for Megan. She saw it as a victory not just for herself, but for all women who have been shamed, dismissed, and blamed for violent crimes committed against them.
Megan also expressed her concern for women who suffer in silence, particularly Black women who are often overlooked due to societal stereotypes. She emphasized the need for society to create safer environments for women to come forward about violent behavior without fear of retaliation.
In the aftermath of the trial, Megan has been focusing on healing and self-care. She has taken a break from social media, spent time with her loved ones, and turned to prayer and journaling as therapeutic outlets. She also spoke about the importance of setting boundaries and protecting her peace.
“I’m putting myself first now because I know what I like, I know what I don’t like, I know what I’m not going to tolerate, and I know what I can endure because I’ve been battle-tested for so long“, she declared.
Despite the trauma she has experienced, Megan remains optimistic about her future. She is excited about returning to music and exploring new sounds. She also expressed her gratitude to her fans, known as the Hotties, for their unwavering support throughout her ordeal.
In her closing remarks, Megan shared a powerful message for other survivors of violence: “You matter. You are not at fault. You are important. You are loved. You are not defined by your trauma. You can continue to write beautiful, new chapters to your life story. Just because you are in a bad situation doesn’t mean you are a bad person. Our value doesn’t come from the opinions of other people. As long as you stand your ground and live in your truth, nobody can take your power“.
