Ten years ago, in 2015, Max Mara launched the Whitney Bag as a tribute to the opening of the Whitney Museum of American Art. Designed in collaboration with the Renzo Piano Building Workshop, the bag quickly became a modern classic.
The Whitney Bag was originally launched to commemorate the opening of the new Whitney Museum of American Art in Manhattan. Inspired by the museum’s distinctive exterior, the bag’s ribbed structure mirrors the building’s innovative facade.

To commemorate this decade-long journey, Max Mara is releasing a numbered limited edition of 125 pieces in the original aluminum hue. The anniversary edition features a striking red nappa leather lining that contrasts beautifully with the metallic exterior. In addition, the collection expands with thirteen fresh colors including soft pink, ocean blue, lichen green and gold in six different sizes. Each bag bears the signature fire-stamped inscription “Designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop.” A five-ribbed style was added to expand the collection’s modular appeal.
The anniversary celebrations kicked off during Milan’s 63rd Salone del Mobile in April with a stunning window display at Max Mara’s flagship store on Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Throughout May, special exhibitions and events will continue in major fashion capitals, including Rome, Paris, London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Dubai, and coming full circle with the Whitney Gala in New York on May 20th.
Recognized by prestigious institutions such as the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and FIT, the Max Mara Whitney Bag remains a symbol of Italian craftsmanship after a decade.
