Each ensemble showcases a seamless blend of past and present, of story and style. In an exclusive interview with Madame Figaro, Maïwenn and Hollywood star Johnny Depp shared insights into their latest project, “Jeanne du Barry“, which opened the Cannes Film Festival. The film, a historical drama, sees Maïwenn in the titular role and Depp transformed into Louis XV.
Maïwenn’s fascination with Jeanne du Barry, a character she first encountered in Sofia Coppola’s “Marie-Antoinette“, led her to extensively research and ultimately portray this “magnificent loser” who rises in social class only to lose everything. She described the character’s journey as a “fairy tale in reverse“.
The casting of Johnny Depp as Louis XV was a surprising turn of events. After several French actors were unavailable, Maïwenn decided to look beyond national borders and approached Depp. The actor, known for his roles as Jack Sparrow, Willy Wonka and Edward Scissorhands, was intrigued by the offer and accepted after a lengthy and engaging conversation with Maïwenn.
Depp’s transformation into Louis XV was a meticulous process. He described the role as becoming several people, all while maintaining a regal and slow demeanor. The actor also had to navigate the complexities of 18th-century French, a challenge he tackled with the help of a language coach.
The film’s production was not without its challenges. Rumors of tensions on set circulated, but both Maïwenn and Depp emphasized their commitment to the project and their mutual respect for each other’s creative processes. Maïwenn, who was both directing and acting, found the dual role demanding but ultimately rewarding. She appreciated Depp’s dedication to the role and his willingness to offer different interpretations of scenes.
The interview also touched on the themes of the film, particularly power dynamics and the role of women. Maïwenn and Depp reflected on the historical context of the film and its relevance today. They discussed the power of charm and sensuality, and how these can shift the balance of power, as seen in the relationship between Jeanne du Barry and Louis XV.
Both Maïwenn and Depp shared their personal moments of defiance and transformation in their careers, drawing parallels with Jeanne du Barry’s own journey. For Maïwenn, her directorial debut “Pardonnez-moi” was a pivotal moment, while for Depp, his role in “Ed Wood” marked a significant turning point.
