Following a ’70s-inspired collection for Spring/Summer 2021, LaQuan Smith has now returned with bold looks for the Fall/Winter 2021 season.
Smith makes clothes for powerful women who are ready to have fun, too. And we see that in every piece of his latest collection, deftly mixing his signature fetishy fun with classic American sportswear sophistication.
The collection was a fearless contrast of textures and moods, featuring glossy and velvet fabrics. One of the most eye-catching looks combined a lustrous motorcycle jacket that almost looks like melting chocolate with matching brown and orange pants that come with a provocative cut-out detail at the back or a sleek navy blue PVC pencil skirt with a charcoal wool bustier and over shirt. Further standouts include a puff-sleeved piece in a dark chocolate hue, as well as velvet animal prints on sheer garments. Deep blue shades are added to the mix, while gray jackets and tops add balance to overall looks.
This Fall/Winter 2021 collection color palette – fire engine red, chocolate brown, camel and navy – brought to mind make-up, which would seem like something Smith is primed to do, as part of a beauty collaboration, perhaps.
Adding to the sense of luxe was a pastel mink coat, and a reversible knitted fox and wool coat, part of his first collaboration with Saga Furs.
“I wanted to design a collection that was embracing what I do and who I am”, shared LaQuan Smith. “It’s a looking-good, feeling-good collection with the understanding and the ownership of the fact that we are a Black-owned luxury brand. So I wanted things to be as unapologetic and unique as possible, diving deeper into my truth as a designer”.
