Luxury fashion brand Jil Sander is strengthening its presence in Japan with the opening of an extraordinary flagship boutique in Tokyo‘s Ginza district. The magnificent 6749 square feet (627 m²), spread over two meticulously designed floors, stands proudly among the brand’s twenty Japanese retail locations and is the brand’s largest worldwide.
Creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier collaborated with renowned architectural firm Casper Mueller Kneer on their second project with the brand, following the London flagship on Bond Street.
The flagship showcases an impressive commitment to environmental awareness. Monochromatic marble surfaces contrast with brass fixtures, while innovative furniture pieces made from recycled CD cases demonstrate forward-thinking sustainability. Silver-blue travertine adorns the walls and staircases, creating a sophisticated geological ambience that is enhanced by carefully positioned lighting that mimics natural daylight.
British sculptor Rachel Whiteread’s installation Bergamo II inaugurates the store’s dedicated art space, a first for the brand. Whiteread expressed her excitement: “It is a great honour for my work to be exhibited and to become part of the architecture in this beautifully designed flagship store in Ginza.”
The flagship showcases Jil Sander‘s full collection as well as exclusive pieces for Ginza. The special capsule collection, named “Gin,” which means silver in Japanese, pays tribute to the district’s silver heritage through signature pieces with sterling accents. The space also introduces the brand’s Fine Jewelry line, featuring exquisite pieces in white and yellow gold with diamond embellishments.
Architects Marianne Mueller and Olaf Kneer articulated their perspective: “We continue to find beauty in materials, common and sometimes overlooked situations, as well as in mineral materials such as stones and marbles, which speak of the Earth’s geological time.”
