With his latest Spring/Summer 2023 collection, shown at Lower Manhattan’s South Street Seaport, Jason Wu pays homage to the American fashion of the mid-1990s dominated by the triumvirate of Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Donna Karen.
“It was such a high in American fashion, and that doesn’t get celebrated enough”, he told Hollywood Reporter. “Also, I’ve been at 35th Street and Seventh Avenue for 10 years now. That’s right in the heart of everything, all my fashion memories are there, and I love it. So instead of looking outward for inspiration, I wanted to look inward while paying tribute to the incredible talent of that era, in my own interpretation”.
It was a collection filled with light and softness, filled with dresses and pants wrapped around the body, looks included semisheer inserts or minimalist prints of flowers in Japanese Shibari bondage created in partnership with artist Leonardo Pucci as well as lingerie-inspired pieces. Pops of color were seen throughout the collection’s calming palette in shades of nude, lilac, pale yellow, gold, and of course, Prussian blue.
