Emerging from the depths of summer fashion, ‘’The Little Mermaid’’ star Halle Bailey graces V Magazine’s Summer 2023 edition in a splendid underwater tableau. Captured by photographer Rob Rusling, Bailey presents an enchanting spectacle, adorned in a Fendi Haute Couture creation, further accentuated with luxurious pieces from Bulgari’s jewelry collection.
This special underwater-inspired cover story witnessed Bailey swathed in a selection of haute couture designs from the houses of Armani Privé, Miss Sohee, Christian Dior, Valentino, Jean Paul Gaultier, Schiaparelli and Chanel. Chosen by stylist Anna Trevelyan, these opulent pieces form a harmonious blend with state-of-the-art AI technology and photography, offering an otherworldly and captivating visual experience.
Tinisha Meeks crafts the stunning hair, while Christiana Cassell works her magic with make-up, and Thuy Nguyen completes the look with impeccable manicure. Olivia Giles’ set design and Johnny Pascucci’s production further enhance the ethereal aesthetic.
In an interview with V Magazine, Bailey shared her experiences from the audition process to the filming of the Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid“. She revealed that her audition for Ariel was her first for a leading role in a major film. Despite her initial nervousness, Bailey’s performance moved the audition panel to tears, leading to two more auditions, a screen test, and eventually, the role of Ariel.
Bailey’s journey to becoming Ariel was not without its challenges. She had to move to London for the filming, which coincided with the onset of the pandemic. This meant that she was isolated from her family and had to navigate this new experience alone. This isolation, however, helped Bailey connect with Ariel’s feelings of being in a new place and yearning for something more. It also allowed her to discover her strength as an individual and a young woman venturing out on her own.
The filming process was a learning experience for Bailey. She learned to assert herself on set, inspired by co-stars like Melissa McCarthy, who was unafraid to speak up and command the set. Bailey also had to communicate through facial expressions for half of the film, as Ariel loses her voice, teaching her the importance of patience and the power of voice.
Bailey believes that the movie carries universal lessons for both children and adults. It encourages viewers to pursue their dreams and passions, especially when they feel there is something greater for them. For Bailey, the filming process was a journey of self-discovery and personal growth, and she hopes that the audience will draw inspiration from Ariel’s story, just as she did.
