For the first time since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the duo formed by the Pakistani Norwegian photographer Benjamin Alexander Huseby and the Turkish German designer Isik was back on the Parisian catwalks with their GmbH collection for Spring/Summer 2023.
It was at the Lycée Molière in the 16th arrondissement of Paris that the duo chose to celebrate South Asian culture, with a light and bright collection, imbued with references to Arab and Asian cultures.
Called “Ghazal“, a literary genre in the form of a love poem that flourished in Persia in the 13th and 14th centuries but is also found in India and Central Asia, the collection was inspired by traditional South Asian clothing including sarong-like skirts in satin fabrics, paired with shirts or square suit jackets, and sandals made in collaboration with Scholl. The second part of the show completely changed the repertoire, offering a more exuberant wardrobe, with dramatic faux-fur coats and scarves, tailoring and silhouettes that wink at an 80s nightclub.
The duo was also collaborating this season with Syrian artist Abdelrazak Shaballot to design an Arabic calligraphy motif that appeared on several pieces. On others, prints by Indonesian artist Rofi were inspired by the transformative properties of water.
