Whispers of vintage glamour envelop the streets, as Givenchy’s Fall/Winter 2023 campaign emerges from the shadows, promising a melange of Parisian sophistication with street-ready audacity. In the cyclical rhythm of fashion, where the old often finds its way to newness, this collection is reminiscent of a time when couture reigned supreme.
Heji Shin, an ace behind the lens, takes center stage for this women’s wear spectacle. Unlike the men’s campaign, which saw Matthew M. Williams himself as the visual maestro capturing K-pop sensation Taeyang, this iteration focuses on three luminaries of the modeling realm: Mona Tougaard, Karolina Spakowski and Liu Wen. The setting? An intimate, minimal space, reminiscent of iconic couture photoshoots from yesteryears.
However, where Givenchy‘s campaign may not tread on conceptual depth, it compensates with an articulate portrayal of its latest sartorial ventures. It’s an ode, so to speak, to the illustrious eras of the 50s and 60s. These images aren’t just a representation of clothing but are emblematic of the brand’s ethos: a seamless blend of historic charm and modern-day flair.
Matthew M. Williams, the Creative director, encapsulated the spirit, stating, “I wanted to express Givenchy’s new elegance by taking cues from our past and adapting them to the present. The look focuses on confidence, comfort and empowerment, three concepts that are integral to the House’s codes. Today, they are personified by Mona Tougaard, Karolina Spakowski and Liu Wen”.
On a closer glance, one sees the campaign as a treasure trove of contemporary elegance. There’s power in the structured tailoring, drama in the exaggerated volumes, and innovation in the avant-garde constructions. Yet, these statement pieces promise wearability, echoing comfort and empowerment.
But what is couture without the glitz of accessories? The Voyou bag redefines finesse in its medium size, while Shark Lock Cowboy boots narrate tales of old-world charm blended with modern aesthetics. Add a sprinkle of jewelry – Stitch rings, Charm necklaces, Daisy earrings, and the audacious Giv-Cut sunglasses, and you have a canvas that paints both the past and the present.
