Maximilian Davis presented his Ferragamo Spring/Summer 2025 collection in Milan, drawing inspiration from the brand’s rich history and unexpected connection to the world of dance. Davis unearthed a captivating mid-century photograph of Salvatore Ferragamo, the brand’s founder, meticulously fitting a pair of shoes on renowned African-American dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham. This discovery served as the catalyst for the collection and ignited Davis’ fascination with the intersection of fashion and dance.

The collection showcased a range of pieces that seamlessly blended practicality with elegance. Early looks featured ballet-inspired garments, including tights, bodysuits and wrap tops that echoed the practice attire of dancers. These were paired with the brand’s signature Hug bag, adding a touch of off-duty chic. The influence of Rudolf Nureyev, the celebrated Russian ballet star who favored Ferragamo shoes in the 1980s, was also evident. Davis incorporated parachute fabrics and washed silks reminiscent of the era to create low-slung trench coats, oversized silhouettes and blousons cinched with hip belts.

The collection transcended the realm of athleticism, venturing into eveningwear with captivating opera coats in sumptuous suede and nylon, cocoon-like dresses, and generously cut leather blousons and pea coats. Davis’ keen eye for detail was evident in the intricate construction of the garments, many of which featured removable panels and adjustable elements that allowed for versatility and movement. The color palette was understated yet sophisticated, with putty tones dominating the runway and providing a neutral backdrop for the intricate designs.

Davis’ exploration of the Ferragamo archives revealed a treasure trove of shoe designs, each with its own unique story. He was inspired by a 1950s photograph of Salvatore Ferragamo fitting shoes on Katherine Dunham, whose Caribbean heritage resonated with the designer’s own background. This connection was further emphasized by the inclusion of frayed denim suits and signature jelly-like moccasins, a nod to Dunham’s research trips to the Caribbean.
