Travelers seeking quiet luxury and heartfelt hospitality now have a new global beacon in Domaine de la Klauss. Nestled in Montenach, a quaint village in the Moselle region of France, this intimate retreat won top honors at the World Luxury Hotel Awards in Barcelona last weekend.

Here, twenty-eight keys unlock more than rooms; they open to curated moments. Guests are wrapped in Gemology spa rituals, greeted by staff who remember their names without prompting, and seated beneath candlelight where silence is part of the experience. “We are proud to have made Moselle shine on the world stage,” said owner Alexandre Keff, standing beside his wife, Mathilde, after accepting the award. “None of this would be possible without our guests and team.”

The accolades didn’t stop with romance. The property also earned the title of Luxury Small Hotel in Europe, further solidifying its status among boutique getaways that refuse to compromise. Downstairs, Le K restaurant, led by chef Benoît Potdevin, claimed the title of Best Contemporary Cuisine in Europe. He accepted the trophy alongside dining room director Grégoire Prigent, a nod to how the front and back of the house work together.

Romance here isn’t manufactured. It lives in moss-covered garden paths, breakfast trays left outside doors without a knock, and fireplaces lit before you ask. “It’s not about rose petals on beds,” Keff explains. “It’s knowing when someone wants solitude, champagne, or just to be left alone for an hour.” This instinct won them the award for the Most Romantic Atmosphere in Europe, too—a rare double win.

Montenach itself offers little fanfare. There are no neon signs or tour buses. What it offers is proximity: Germany and Luxembourg are minutes away, making this corner of Lorraine ideal for slow, cross-border exploration. Guests often arrive tired from the bustle of the city and leave feeling restored after wandering the vineyards, tasting the local mirabelle eau-de-vie, or simply staring at the clouds from their private terrace.

Relais & Châteaux membership ensures certain standards, but Domaine de la Klauss quietly exceeds them. There’s no shouting from rooftops or Instagram bait. Instead, handwritten notes appear beside evening turndown chocolates. Staff suggest walks based on your mood, not guidebooks. Evenings end with regional cheeses paired not by sommeliers but by locals who grew up eating them.

We don’t chase awards,” says Potdevin, whose tasting menu changes with the moon phase. “We chase the moment when a guest forgets time exists. That’s when we know we’ve done our job.”
