David Koma, the Georgian-born designer known for his sculptural silhouettes and bold, sensual cocktail dresses and gowns, has been named the new Creative director of Italian fashion house Blumarine. Koma’s first collection for the house will debut for the Pre-Fall 2025 season, marking an exciting new chapter in the designer’s career as he celebrates the 15th anniversary of his eponymous label this year.
Koma succeeds Walter Chiapponi, who left the brand after just one collection in March. Chiapponi was preceded by Nicola Brognano, who designed for the brand for four years.
Marco Marchi, sole director of Exelite, the holding company that owns Blumarine, expressed confidence in Koma’s ability to interpret the brand’s codes to perfection, stating, “David Koma’s aesthetic captured me from the beginning. I am sure that David will be able to interpret Blumarine’s codes to perfection, thanks to his vision and stylistic sensitivity, characterized by an overwhelming femininity.”
Koma, who launched his London-based fashion house in 2009 after graduating from Central Saint Martins, is a regular at London Fashion Week. His designs have attracted a celebrity following, with fans including Jennifer Lopez, Olivia Rodrigo and Gal Gadot. Most recently, Koma’s work has been in the spotlight with his first ad campaign for Resort 2025 (Cruise 2025) featuring Lourdes Leon, Madonna’s daughter, and his creation of several looks for Beyoncé’s “Renaissance World Tour” in the summer of 2023.
Koma expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, saying, “Blumarine embodies a unique blend of sensuality, timeless glamour and elegance that I always admired, and it is an honor to be able to write the next chapter in the brand’s illustrious history. I am excited to celebrate Blumarine’s rich, creative heritage while infusing it with my own modern vision. The brand’s feminine aesthetic deeply resonates with me, making this journey feel incredibly authentic. I am eager to craft collections that inspire and captivate our audience, ushering in an exciting new era of innovation and creativity at this esteemed house.”
