Versace has announced that Donatella Versace will step down from her long-standing position as Chief Creative Officer, paving the way for Dario Vitale to lead the brand’s creative direction. Vitale, previously Design and Image Director at Miu Miu, will assume his new role effective April 1st, 2025. His appointment marks a historic shift for Versace, signaling a new creativity after nearly three decades under Donatella’s artistic leadership.
Donatella Versace, 69, has had a profound impact on the spirit of the company since she took over the creative reins in 1997 following the tragic death of her brother, Gianni Versace. Despite having no formal fashion training, her instinctive vision has cemented Versace as a synonym for bold sensuality and Italian glamour. Notable moments under her leadership, such as Jennifer Lopez‘s iconic jungle print gown at the 2000 Grammys, cemented Versace’s global presence. She has also been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights.

Although she is stepping down from the creative helm, Donatella will transition into the role of Chief Brand Ambassador. In this new role, she will focus on philanthropic initiatives, red carpet appearances and maintaining the brand’s global identity. “It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy,” stated Donatella. “He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity.”
Born near Naples in 1983, Dario Vitale brings extensive experience from some of fashion’s most influential houses. After graduating from Istituto Marangoni in 2006, Vitale began his career at Bottega Veneta, followed by a brief stint at Dsquared2. He joined Miu Miu in July 2010 and quickly rose to the position of Design and Image Director. At Miu Miu, he played a key role in defining the brand’s aesthetic and driving its global success until his departure in September 2023.
“I am truly honored to join Versace as the Chief Creative Officer and to be a part of this special and powerful fashion luxury House created by Gianni and Donatella,” said Vitale. “The House of Versace has a unique heritage that has spanned decades and has shaped the history of fashion. I want to express my sincere thank you to Donatella for her trust in me, and for her tireless dedication to the extraordinary brand that Versace is today. It is a privilege to contribute to the future growth of Versace and its global impact through my vision, expertise and dedication.”

Vitale is expected to present his first collection for Versace during Milan Fashion Week in September 2025.
The leadership transition comes amid broader changes within Capri Holdings, Versace‘s parent company. According to recent reports, after a blocked merger attempt with Tapestry, Capri has reportedly considered selling the brand, with Prada showing potential interest. Vitale’s history with Miu Miu, a subsidiary of Prada, adds an intriguing layer to the speculation.
