After five decades of digital and quartz innovation, CASIO launches its first automatic watch, marking a significant departure for the Japanese manufacturer. This expansion represents a calculated move beyond the brand’s traditional electronic timepiece territory and targets enthusiasts of mechanical watches who have long associated CASIO with digital displays and solar power.

The EFK-100 collection comprises five distinct models, all of which are housed within the sporty EDIFICE line, which has consistently appealed to motorsport enthusiasts and active professionals. Two standout pieces feature forged carbon dials — the EFK-100CD and EFK-100XPB — created by blending carbon fiber with resin under extreme temperatures and pressures. This manufacturing technique ensures that no two dial surfaces appear identical, giving mass-produced timepieces individual character.

The remaining three models — the EFK-100D-2A, EFK-100D-3A, and EFK-100D-7A — have electroformed dials with realistic carbon fiber textures and are available in blue, green, and white, respectively. All variants maintain the collection’s minimalist aesthetic, featuring date windows at the six o’clock position and hollowed hour and minute hands with phosphorescent tips for enhanced visibility in low light.

CASIO’s decision to enter the automatic watch market stems from growing consumer demand for mechanical timepieces, particularly among younger demographics influenced by social media creators who have made traditional watchmaking more accessible and engaging. Alessandro Trucillo, head of the watch division at CASIO Italy, explained that the brand questioned why loyal customers should seek automatic watches from competitors when CASIO could satisfy that desire within its own ecosystem.

These timepieces rely on the NH35A movement, which is manufactured in Malaysia by Seiko and is commonly recognized in the industry as the 4R35 when appearing in Seiko-branded watches. This automatic caliber operates at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) and provides approximately 41 hours of power reserve. The movement includes hand-winding capability, quick-set date adjustment, and hacking seconds functionality, making it user-friendly and serviceable by most qualified watchmakers.

Construction details reveal solid stainless steel cases paired with matching H-link bracelets featuring a combination of brushed flat surfaces and polished flanks. The bracelets close with deployant buckles that operate with a push button, though they lack micro-adjustment systems or quick-change capabilities. Sapphire crystal glass protects the dial face and provides superior scratch resistance compared to mineral glass alternatives. These timepieces are water resistant up to 10 bar (100 meters), making them suitable for swimming and other recreational water activities.

Transparent screw-down case backs showcase the automatic movement beneath, though the finishing appears relatively basic compared to that of higher-end mechanical watches. This practical approach aligns with CASIO’s value-oriented philosophy while maintaining the visual appeal that automatic watch enthusiasts appreciate.

CASIO’s horological history began in 1974 with the revolutionary Casiotron, recognized as the world’s first digital watch with an automatic calendar. This groundbreaking timepiece established CASIO’s reputation for practical innovation and technological advancement within the watch industry. The subsequent development of the G-SHOCK line in the 1980s and the continuous refinement of digital and solar technologies have solidified Casio’s position in the market for affordable, durable timepieces.

The EFK-100 series is a strategic expansion rather than a complete pivot from Casio’s core competencies. CASIO remains committed to offering accessible pricing while exploring new market segments that complement its existing product lines. The motorsport-inspired design of the collection connects naturally with the established identity of the EDIFICE brand, providing continuity for existing customers while attracting newcomers interested in mechanical watchmaking.

These timepieces are positioned in the competitive sub-$500 automatic watch segment, where they compete against well-established brands like Seiko and Orient, as well as various microbrand manufacturers. CASIO’s extensive global distribution network and brand recognition provide significant advantages when introducing products to new market categories.

The launch began with initial availability in Japan, followed by a gradual rollout to the North American and European markets. This phased approach enables CASIO to assess consumer response and adjust production accordingly while maintaining quality control standards.
