| Balmain Spring 2027 is Antonin Tron’s second collection for the Paris fashion house. It draws on Pierre Balmain’s 1950s archives and California imagery from the 1960s and 1970s. The collection was presented at Hôtel de Maisons in Paris and features animal prints, lingerie details, sharp tailoring, lamé, eel skin and embellished eveningwear. |
For Balmain Spring 2027, Antonin Tron looked backward without treating the archive as a fixed template. His research into Pierre Balmain’s work uncovered backstage photographs taken by Mark Shaw in 1954, where models appeared between changes rather than fully composed for presentation. Tron focused less on the period’s narrow waists and more on the exposed corsetry, bare backs and informal intimacy visible behind the scenes.

Those references shaped a collection that places the body firmly at its centre. Bra-like construction, corset seams and suspender details appeared alongside short skirts and compact evening dresses. Some beaded pieces offered only minimal coverage, while fitted silhouettes replaced much of the volume associated with traditional mid-century couture.
The approach also allowed Tron to revisit another chapter of Balmain history. Christophe Decarnin, who led the house from 2005 to 2011, built a recognizable look around assertive shoulders, narrow proportions and sharply cut trousers. Tron draws selectively from that period rather than reproducing it. The pilot jacket introduced during his first Balmain collection returns with its structured shoulder line intact, but the surrounding clothes are leaner and more closely fitted.

Material choice strengthens that change in direction. Snake-effect leather, eel skin, viscose and silk lamé give many surfaces a polished or wet appearance. Leopard references connect back to Pierre Balmain’s taste for animal patterns, while black, ivory, mineral grey, copper, gold, orange and pale yellow broaden the collection beyond a strictly Parisian palette.

California provides the second major reference point. Tron has long been interested in the state’s 1960s and 1970s counterculture, particularly locations such as Joshua Tree, Palm Springs and Death Valley. Here, those ideas appear through elongated trousers, glossy outerwear and colours associated with dry landscapes and changing daylight rather than through literal costume.
The setting added another historical connection. Tron presented the collection at Hôtel de Maisons in Paris’s seventh arrondissement, a residence closely associated with Karl Lagerfeld. Lagerfeld began his career at Balmain in the 1950s, giving the location a direct link to the house’s earlier decades.

What becomes clearer in Tron’s second season is his willingness to make Balmain more sensual without abandoning its tailored foundation. The strongest pieces combine precision with exposure: a defined shoulder above a close-fitting waist, or severe trousers beneath a revealing top. There is still room for Tron to develop the draped jersey work for which he has been known independently. For now, Balmain Spring 2027 shows a designer testing how much of the house’s past can be retained while changing the attitude of the clothes.
