Anna Sawai, the Japanese actress who captivated audiences in the miniseries “Shōgun” and made history with her Emmy and Golden Globe wins, has been announced as Dior‘s newest brand ambassador, representing the women’s collections. The appointment places Sawai alongside the likes of Elisabeth Debicki, Jenna Ortega, Rosamund Pike and Sonam Kapoor. Her partnership with the French house underscores Dior‘s focus on diverse, culturally resonant figures who embody modernity and grace.

Sawai, who was born in New Zealand and moved to Japan with her family at the age of 10, has had a career that spans music, theater and television. She had her first acting role in a stage production of “Annie” at the age of 11. From 2013 to 2018, she was one of the lead vocalists of the girl group Faky. After leaving the group in 2018, she returned to acting with roles in “Pachinko” and “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” However, her portrayal of Lady Mariko in “Shōgun” made her the first Japanese and first actress of Asian descent to win a lead actress Emmy.
“Dior represents timeless elegance, strength and individuality – qualities I’ve always admired and aspired to embody,” said Sawai.
Sawai’s red carpet choices have already hinted at the partnership. At the Golden Globes in January, she wore a white leather bustier and silk skirt designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri and styled by Karla Welch, who curates Sawai’s public image.
Additionally, Sawai was named a Cartier ambassador last fall.
