W Magazine Volume 3, 2023, aptly named ‘’The Pop Issue’’, features an impressive digital-themed cover with HBO’s ‘’The Idol’’ stars, Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye, famously known as The Weeknd.
Captured by photographer Tyler Mitchell, the first cover (above) boasts Depp, stunning in a classic white Chanel Haute Couture dress paired with Chanel High Jewelry earrings, her modern high ponytail hairstyle complementing the elegance of the outfit. Posing with a camera, a television screen displaying Tesfaye next to her adds a distinct touch to the composition.
The second cover features Tesfaye, exhibiting a suave look in a luxe fur coat, shirt, and tie by Bottega Veneta, juxtaposed with an entrancing image of Depp in a bold red lip color (below).
W’s Editor in Chief, Sara Moonves, curates the cover story’s ensembles from notable labels such as Saint Laurent by Anthony Vaccarello, Prada, Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture by Haider Ackermann, Alexander McQueen, Loewe, Fendi Haute Couture, Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Martine Rose, Armani Privé, Hermès, Tom Ford and Schiaparelli Haute Couture.
Lily-Rose’s hair is styled by Sam McKnight, with make-up by Lauren Parsons, and manicure by Ama Quashie. Tesfaye’s hair is by Daronn Carr and grooming by Christine Nelli, with the striking set designed by Andy Hillman. The production credit goes to Holmes Production and Connect the Dots.
In the realm of pop culture, a new HBO series, “The Idol“, is making waves. The narrative revolves around a pop icon, Jocelyn, played by Lily-Rose Depp, and her intricate relationship with Tedros, a darkly charismatic club owner portrayed by Abel Tesfaye.
The series is a brainchild of Tesfaye and Sam Levinson, the award-winning writer and director of “Euphoria“. The duo envisioned a story that explores the dynamics of fame and the potential dangers of blind fan loyalty. The series is a manifestation of this vision, presenting a narrative where a pop star falls for a potentially harmful figure, and no one dares to intervene.
Depp’s character, Jocelyn, is a music star so renowned that she needs only one name. Her character is a blend of vulnerability and strength, a pop star who can dominate a room and never shies away from her sparkle. Depp drew inspiration from various pop icons, including Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, as well as French cinema icons like Brigitte Bardot to shape Jocelyn’s persona.
Tesfaye, on the other hand, juggles two personas in the series. He transitions between his real-life persona, The Weeknd, and his character, Tedros. This dual role presented a unique challenge for Tesfaye, who had to switch between his well-known musical persona and a character who doesn’t know how to sing.
The series, set to air on June 4th, is a reshoot and reinvention of the entire first season. It was filmed in Tesfaye’s house, blurring the line between fiction and reality. Despite the challenges, both Tesfaye and Depp are optimistic about the series, confident in the knowledge that they have given their best to bring “The Idol” to life.
