Designer Grace Wales Bonner debuted her Fall/Winter 2023 collection at a runway show held in the luxury epicenter of Paris, Place Vendôme. The event took place at the historic 17th-century Hôtel d’Évreux and featured a coed lineup inspired by James Baldwin, Josephine Baker, and the Maharaja of Indore, who all left a significant mark on Paris’ cultural scene.
“Thinking about what Paris as a place gave them license to do and express. This idea of freedom of self-expression, to define yourself”. Paris, she speculated, “may create space to have more license to be expressive”.
The collection showcased a fusion of refined tailoring and sportswear-inspired pieces, such as a Jamaican soccer jersey paired with tuxedo pants and snakeskin boots. Her ongoing partnership with Adidas Originals was also highlighted through a variety of new sneakers.
Wales Bonner’s designs infuse an Afro-Atlantic essence into European luxury fashion, creating a unique blend of cultures and places.
Known for her attention to craftsmanship, the London-based designer has received numerous awards, including the LVMH Prize in 2016. Her aim is to solidify her brand’s position in the luxury market and recently expanded her collection to include footwear and jewelry for women. This show marked a step forward in her mission to establish a foothold in the competitive luxury fashion scene in Paris.
