“Spring/Summer 2023 is a celebration of people who are often unseen… In this trying time – a slightly dystopian time, I think – hope and optimism were not enough, the vigilance, alertness is more… Hope is in the youth. It’s a celebration of the colorful”, said Prabal Gurung.
And, to stage his optimistic and hopeful look at the world, the designer chose the old Japanese consulate on the United Nations Plaza – the location is obviously not random. “It represents everything that we want to see in the world”, Gurung added about the location.
His vision translated into an exuberant and inclusive collection, worn by models of all sizes and genders.
This motley cast of “characters” wears tulle, sequins, revealing sheer layers, feathers, bright and bold colors and hallucinogenic florals. There are also lace bras and briefs peeked out from sheer blouses and pants, drapey blouses, low-slung, sheer suiting with boudoir accents.
It was a collection that celebrated individuality and gave voice to the underrepresented.
