Inspired by the sub-aquatic and titled “A Voyage in Descent”, the Satoshi Kondo’ Spring/Summer 2022 collection for Issey Miyake was a stand-out collection which highlighted the traditional craft techniques, undulating organic shapes and blurred color on loose and flowing silhouettes.

Kondo introduced new silhouettes never before seen from the brand while quintessentially staying true to its origins. Emphasizing the wearerʼs waistline, Kondo presented the Carved series, noted by its fluid curves and oh-so trendy side cutouts on both sides of a suit jacket and blouse. Meanwhile, the new Fluidity Loop series featured fluid motion garments made from a fabric knit in a spiral shape. Its versatility lends itself to be worn in many different ways. As models walked, the color underneath was exposed, bringing to life the idea of fluid motion.
Honing in on the origins, the brand’s signature pleat got an exaggerated makeover with the Link Ring series. Round pieces of fabrics were constructed to give rise to a bold new garment. Although teeming with creativity and fantasy, Kondo didn’t skip out on the practicality of the garments. Each piece can be folded along the pleats into a compact size, perfect for packing.
Directed by Yuichi Kodama, the video presented a riveting world built upon the collection theme of undersea exploration. As the music progresses and builds up to a pervading, tense ambience, various scenes introduced models onstage, expressing qualities of fluency and elegance before descending further into the sea. Down in the depths of the sea, through mysterious and wavering dimming light, spectacles appeared one after another, leading to the uplifting moments of the last scene.
