Blumarine’s creative director, Nicola Brognano, has always been focused on pushing the fashion brand forward, rather than dwelling on its past. However, a chance encounter with a 1990s image of actress Milla Jovovich led Brognano to rediscover the movie “The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc” which starred Jovovich. The film captivated Brognano and inspired him to use Joan of Arc as the muse for Blumarine’s latest collection.
Brognano’s interpretation of Joan of Arc was a departure from the label’s usual flirty and frilly aesthetic. Instead, he opted for a more intense and erotic vibe, using the character’s legendary strength and passion as inspiration. The collection was showcased in a stony, barren set with a blazing iron-cast B symbolizing Joan’s pyre.
The Fall/Winter 2023 collection was a mix of metallic and liquid fabrics, featuring tight-fitting draped minidresses, floor-sweeping shearling greatcoats, slender see-through tunics, and midriff-baring tops. Brognano also included chunky buckles and knee-high shearling boots in the collection. The eveningwear options included a form-fitting leopard-printed jersey gown and a flame-red asymmetrical frayed-hem gown.
Brognano’s interpretation of Joan of Arc was a bold move, but he pulled it off with confidence, creating a collection that was both visually stunning and true to the brand’s roots. The designer hinted at Joan’s complexity only tangentially, focusing instead on her visual appeal. With a coterie of fearless Blumarine models, Brognano proved that even on a red carpet, relaxed glamour can be achieved with aplomb.
