Known for her distinctive style and unapologetic individuality, Kristen McMenamy has been a beacon of inspiration since her rise to fame during the supermodel era of the 1990s. Now, at 58, she continues to captivate audiences, gracing runways, ad campaigns and magazine covers alike.
In a recent interview with Vogue Japan, McMenamy shared insights into her enduring career and unique charm. She began her modeling journey over 40 years ago, standing out with her edgy style and short black hair in a time when blond and long hair dominated the scene. Her unconventional look, coupled with her fearless approach to fashion, set her apart from her contemporaries.
McMenamy’s career took a significant turn when she decided to drastically change her look during a photoshoot with renowned photographer Steven Meisel. She cut her red hair short, dyed it black, and shaved off her eyebrows. This bold transformation marked the beginning of a new chapter in her career and life.
Despite her age, McMenamy remains active and vibrant, with a youthful spirit that shines through her work. “People tend to treat me like a sage as I age, but I feel like a child. I just want to enjoy every day“, she shared. Her Instagram, which she started during the pandemic, has amassed over 170,000 followers, showcasing her daily fashion choices and her creative approach to style.
McMenamy’s fashion philosophy is simple: don’t be bound by rules. She believes that fashion is a reflection of one’s inner self, and age or body shape should not limit one’s expression. She encourages everyone, especially those considered “older” by societal standards, to wear what they love and live freely.
In the interview, McMenamy also shared her admiration for Steven Meisel, who she credits for inspiring her adventurous spirit in fashion. She fondly remembers her collaborations with other notable figures in the industry, such as Peter Lindbergh and Guido Palau, and her enduring friendship with Helena Christensen.
