The Dior Men Spring/Summer 2025 collection, unveiled recently in Paris, marks a significant milestone for Creative director Kim Jones. This 60th show for the renowned fashion house seamlessly blends artisanal craftsmanship with contemporary menswear, drawing inspiration from South African ceramicist Hylton Nel’s work.
Jones, known for his ability to merge art and fashion, has transformed Nel’s whimsical creations into a sartorial spectacle. The runway featured giant cat sculptures based on Nel’s ceramics, setting an imaginative tone for the collection. These feline forms, including a striking hybrid with a cat’s head and human body, paid homage to ancient Egyptian deities.
The collection’s standout pieces incorporated Nel’s artistic elements throughout. Silver-studded bird motifs adorned high-collared black suits, while playful patterns and slogans enlivened knitwear. A blue-and-white jacket covered in floral embroidery, designed to mimic earthenware textures, showcased the atelier’s exceptional skill, requiring nearly 2,000 hours of meticulous handwork.
Accessories played a crucial role in translating Nel’s aesthetic. Models sported ceramic scarf-like sculptures and cloche hats hand-crocheted by South African artisans. Miniature versions of Dior’s iconic Saddle bag featured charming cat pendants, further emphasizing the collaboration’s playful nature.
Jones’ African upbringing influenced the collection’s overall feel, with pieces suited for exploration. Explorer jackets, wide-cut shorts, and clog-inspired footwear evoked images of traversing the South African veldt. This outdoor sensibility extended to Jones’ interpretation of Dior‘s couture archive, with draped pants and an asymmetrical cape coat inspired by a 1952 women’s design.
The designer’s commitment to impeccable tailoring remained evident throughout. Modern silhouettes in eye-catching two-tone fabrics demonstrated a studied, sculptural approach. Workwear-inspired pieces, including waisted jackets and chore coats, received a luxurious upgrade with sleek finishes that elevated their utilitarian origins.
