The Chanel Fall/Winter 2025 runway was a study in contrasts, combining the brand’s signature precision with whimsical experimentation as the fashion world awaits the debut of new Artistic director Matthieu Blazy in October. Set against the backdrop of Paris Fashion Week, the in-house team presented a lineup that celebrated the legacy of Gabrielle Chanel while nodding to contemporary sensibilities with exaggerated proportions and surreal details.
A black satin ribbon-repeated on invitations and mirrored by a towering spiral sculpture at the Grand Palais-became the collection’s leitmotif. Lemarié’s artisans transformed the motif into delicate bows that adorned organza blouses, beaded sweater sets and military-inspired tweed jackets. The effect balanced severity with softness, particularly in sheer ankle-length skirts layered over shorts and puffy-sleeved blouses framed by high ruffled collars.
Oversized pearls emerged as unexpected heroes, reimagined as crossbody bags and chunky boot heels. Designers manipulated scale with trompe l’oeil effects, including silk prints that mimicked tweed textures and chiffon “jeans” that billowed like jellyfish tentacles. Military trenches were given a feminine edge with satin trims, while three-piece suits incorporated wrap skirts and flared trousers for fluid movement.

Karl Lagerfeld‘s influence was evident in witty accessories: egg-sized minaudières and reverse monochrome twinsets echoed his pop culture fluency. But the collection occasionally stumbled with boxy smocks and sack dresses that felt out of step with fall’s body-conscious trends.
Illusion tulle created ghostly outlines over tweed separates, while shiny finishes on trench coats nodded to a futuristic aesthetic. Tiered skirts in airy fabrics offset structured bouclé jackets, demonstrating Chanel’s mastery of material juxtaposition. Standout looks included cherry red tweed ensembles that extended to matching boaters and gloves – a head-to-toe statement of coordination.
As Blazy prepares to join Chanel next month, this transitional collection honored the house’s codes while leaving room for fresh interpretations. The mix of pragmatic tailoring and dreamy detailing suggests a brand ready to captivate both loyal customers and new audiences.
