In Paris’ American Cathedral, Natalia Alaverdian, founder and designer of A.W.A.K.E. Mode – whose mother is Ukrainian and husband is Russian – presented a multi-material, highly experimental runway show that ranged from the romantic to the rawly refined.
“I normally start sketching [what] comes to mind and there are likely experimental things – textures, ideas, shapes that I just try”, Alaverdian said.
Fusing inspirations like Vikings, Scandinavian fairy tales, and a space desert like the one in David Lynch’s Dune, the designer sent out nearly 60 looks that ranged from offbeat, like a t-shirt with hotel slippers attached to the front like lopsided pockets, a design inspired by Alaverdian dropping those items while packing, to the sculptural.
