Why Detroit? Michigan’s largest city, in the US Midwest, was the third stop in Bottega Veneta’s new show model, initiated last year by the house’s creative director Daniel Lee.

Voluntarily leaving the official Milan calendar, the Milanese luxury house wants to take its collections on the road, all over the world, to show them in the cities where the brand posted up. The first stop of these itinerant stages, called “Salon”, was London, last October, then Berlin in April. Salon 03 was staged a few days ago at the Detroit’s Michigan Theatre, a 4,000-something-seat movie palace built amid the city’s spectacular automotive-fueled boom in the 1920s.
Daniel Lee fell in love with the city on a daylong layover when he was on his way to Jamaica, and as a native of Manchester and a lover of fast cars, techno music and beautiful architecture, he feels a bit like home here.
“Detroit and Manchester have a connection”, said the north-west England native. “Manchester is the industrial heartland of the U.K., and Detroit – known elsewhere as the ‘Motor City’ – is the industrial heartland of America”.
In front of a front row of international and local celebrities, including Jeff Koons, Mary J. Blige, Lil Kim, DJs Carl Craig and Moodymann, fashion designer Tracy Reese, Nigerian singer Burna Boy and actress Debi Mazar, Daniel Lee invoked the sportiest collection he has presented so far, with sporty utility details, sportswear-inspired pieces, denim ensembles reminiscent of factory uniforms, innovative materials, touches fluo reminiscent of the night world as well as dynamic curves, paying homage to the city’s industrial and sonic history.
“I’m obsessed with Detroit. Detroit really is the birthplace of techno, and techno was the music that I was growing up to and going out to. I wanted to use my position to shine a light on all of that”, he said.
