The Kenzo Spring/Summer 2023 campaign embodies the essence of “worldliness, inclusivity, and individuality“, showcasing the designer’s innovative prowess in both men’s and womenswear.
The campaign features an eclectic ensemble of talent, including skateboarder and musician Lil Dre, vocalist Nina Utashiro, and models Moses Battiest, Ama Elsesser, Sunmoon Jung, Lily McMenamy, Omar Sesay, Lulu Tenney and Bomi Youn. This diverse lineup highlights the wide-ranging cultural influences that Kenzo embraces under Nigo’s leadership.
Blending sailor-inspired motifs with streetwear accents, the Spring/Summer 2023 collection juxtaposes seaside elements against vivid, purple-tinged studio backdrops. Collegiate themes are artfully contrasted with quintessential Parisian charm, creating a unique fusion that defines Kenzo’s contemporary aesthetic.
A key aspect of Nigo’s success at Kenzo is his skillful recontextualization of the brand’s iconic imagery. Naval ensembles featuring navy and off-white camp collar shirts and skirts are embellished with a myriad of Kenzo badges. Each badge, whether displaying the word “Jungle” or referencing vintage branding, symbolizes a sailor’s various accomplishments at sea, as if the garment itself is a testament to Nigo’s achievements with the fashion house.
The collection continues to play with nautical themes, introducing a yellow vest adorned with numerous badges, evoking the image of a life jacket. Streetwear influences emerge in the form of a Kenzo-branded nameplate buckle belt and a badged scarf tucked into a model’s jean pocket. Womenswear, too, receives the maritime treatment, reflecting the versatility and cohesion of the Spring/Summer 2023 collection.
