At Paris Fashion Week, Givenchy’s creative director Matthew M. Williams showcased a collection that was both unified and captivating. The soundtrack by Bakar, which began elegantly and slowly before escalating to a more contemporary and energetic beat, set the tone for the show.
The Fall/Winter 2023 collection featured a blend of styles, including couture tailoring, punk, and workwear, all of which were brought together to create a silhouette that was both polished and disciplined. The fabrics used in the collection, such as tartan wool and marled jersey, were treated in a way that was both deconstructed and reconstructed, echoing traditional Japanese techniques. Accessories such as treated work boots, long-toed derby shoes and refabricated versions of the Riccardo Tisci-era Pandora bag were also showcased. The overall look was accentuated by oversized classical pieces of outerwear, which were particularly striking. Williams declared it as one of his favorite collections he has ever done, and it is easy to understand why.
